This course is designed for individuals seeking to learn expedition skills. It combines instruction with a series of climbs that practice and build upon your skill base. We will cover ice axe and crampon use, rope team management, anchors, belays, crevasse rescue, navigation, hazard/risk assessment, rock and ice climbing technique and more. The extended, 12-day format of this program gives participants the opportunity to learn more advanced skills and techniques, and to attempt select climbing objectives.


The 12 day Expedition Primer is one of the most comprehensive climbing programs we offer. It is designed to teach individuals to be competent climbing in the alpine environment. This course is an expedition in its own right, and participants will gain a thorough understanding of expedition climbing skills and logistics. You will learn the techniques necessary to be a safe, confident, climber on a variety of climbing mediums. Areas covered include rock and ice climbing, and general mountaineering. A partial list of skills includes rock and ice climbing technique, ice axe and crampon use, rope team management, knots, anchors, belaying, rappelling, protection systems, hazard/risk assessment, route finding, crevasse rescue, avalanche awareness, and avalanche transceivers. Climbing experience is gained through an exciting series of climbs designed to develop individual skill and technique. There are an incredible variety of outstanding climbing objectives for all abilities! This trip is conducted in a unique mountain environment. The jagged, glaciated, nature of the mountains and the remote setting are ideal places for learning and applying climbing skills.


The area used for these courses is some of the wildest mountain terrain in the world. It is an outstanding setting for learning and applying mountaineering skills. This course is ideal for people seeking to prepare themselves for major expeditions such as Mt. McKinley, Aconcagua, or any of the seven summits. It provides a strong background for individuals who want a solid base in mountaineering. The Expedition Primer is an expedition in its own right! No previous experience is necessary.

HAINES: Haines Alaska is the starting/finishing place for this trip. Haines is a small community located along the majestic fjords at the top of the Inside Passage. The natural beauty and wilderness access in Haines have given it the much-deserved reputation as a center for wilderness adventure in Alaska.

GETTING TO THE MOUNTAINS: Depending on weather and route conditions a variety of modes for transportation are available. We utilize ski planes, snowcats, 4 wheel drive vehicles and sea worthy boats to ensure that travel into the mountains is safe and efficient.

THE MOUNTAINS: Haines borders Glacier Bay National Park The Park and the adjacent 27 million acres comprise the largest protected wilderness area on the planet. It is an extremely mountainous, glaciated, landscape containing several of the largest non-polar ice caps in the world. This terrain is uniquely suited to learning mountaineering skills, and the climbing here is truly spectacular!
